Virus Alert

leave a comment »

It’s Friday. Lets have some midday merriment:

ALERT The Centre for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically. This virus is called Weary Overload Recreational Killer (WORK). If you receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues, or anyone else via any means whatsoever – DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your private life completely. If you should come into contact with WORK you should immediately leave the premises. Take two good friends to the nearest grocery store and purchase one or both of the antidotes – Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system. You should immediately forward this medical alert to five friends. If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is controlling your life.

Google’s new Social Graph API means it’s time to start using XFN

by Jason Preston | February 1st, 2008
The news is out today that Google has launched a Social Graph API – basically an open tool for charting social connections on the open web.
What this means, in short, is that XFN matters now. Google launched with some example tools that let you map out what link relationships they’ve found with your blog and other web sites.
This type of link data has existed for a while, and if you’re using WordPress, you may have already put it in. The big holdup has really been that until now there hasn’t been much use for that metadata—if you bothered to fill in all the information about how you’re connected to the people you link to, nobody cared. So why bother?
Well now Google is trying to pull the kind of relationship superdata that people are generating in Social Networks like Facebook (which, incidentally, Google can’t crawl like it can crawl the open web) out into blogs and web sites.

Following the (Virtual) Crowds

Posted by Max Chafkin at 5:11 PM

This month’s cover package, “The New Basics of Marketing,” went live on Inc.com yesterday. As the title suggests it’s a comprehensive guide to what’s new in online marketing—covering everything from social networks to text message advertising. In putting together the package, we frequently wrestled with this question: How much technology is too much? Which technologies are worth considering, and which ones should be left to the futurists, bloggers, and your children?
Should every CEO of every company spend the next few months building up a presence on Tubearoo, WikiHow, Furl and the 47 other must have networks on the list? Probably not. But, as we wrote in this month’s issue, every company should at least understand what social networks are all about. Read our story to find out why and then check out this sidebar for a guide to advertising on a handful of the top networks.

Social Networks: Ready to Join the Party?

Are social networks right for your company

Social Networks: Ready to Join the Party?

Selling yourself on Facebook.

Beyond the simple fact that social networks offer advertisers access to tens of millions of potential customers, they present two clear opportunities for more effective campaigns. First, they promise the ability to target customers with precision. If you want to reach baseball-loving twentysomethings who live in Seattle and have a college education, you can find social network groups that fill the bill. Second, social networks encourage your customers to recommend your company to others. Let’s say your company has a Facebook profile, and another user signs on as a “fan” of yours. Facebook will then alert that person’s friends, informing them of the connection. Voil: textbook viral marketing for free.

Introducing a Productivity Initiative

Create a Target Board

Measuring productivity is a vital component of any initiative to increase productivity levels. Communicating targets to staff members can actually prove to be a useful tool in facilitating an increase in productivity. Without clear and visible objectives, employees have no reason to improve their productivity. What is more, it is unfair to expect employees to guess what their targets are! Creating and updating target boards on a regular basis and ensuring that they are visible to staff (through a suitable medium) can contribute toward developing an objective-based working environment within which increased productivity can be clearly documented, and employees can be rewarded or held accountable for their performance.

Tips for building confidence

How to Build Confidence
As long as I’ve worked with, trained, and improved sales people, the number one focus for success has been their confidence. More important than any sales tactic is how each sales person feels about themselves. Simply put, people sell to their level of esteem. Here, then, are key areas to improve your team’s confidence and esteem:
Knowing you: Sales people who want to improve their mediocre performance must begin by understanding themselves.
Knowing the company: And by knowing the company, they must know the people. One of the key areas of team building is knowing and embracing the people around them everyday.
Knowing the customer: Author and businessman, Harvey McKay, wrote a list of 64 things you should know about your client to really be effective
Knowing the product: Become an expert on your product.
Set your vision: Set a vision of where you want to go. When anyone has a burning vision of what they want out of life, small set backs remain small.
